Beanpot
'Beanpot' is an ice hockey tournament of men played among four major college hockey schools of the Boston city and Massachusetts area. The tournament is being held every year since 1952-53. The competitors of the tournaments are Boston University Terriers, who were 46 times finalists and 29 times winner; Boston College Eagles, 30 time finalist and 15 time winner; Harvard University Crimson, 24 time finalist and 10 time winner and the last Northeastern University Huskies who were 12 time finalist and 4 time winner.
The first Beanpot competition was held in December 1952 at Boston Arena and was played during 1953 calendar year. After that next two tournaments were held in January 1954 and 1955. Most of successive tournaments have been played in February except 1978 tournament. Till to 1956 the Beanpots has been held at the old Boston Garden and after then it is being held on TD Garden.
The large success in men's ice hockey tournament encouraged Beanpot to arrange other sports including women's ice hockey, softball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, women's cycling and rowing. Apart from these four contestants, Boston College Office of Undergraduate Admission and Boston University Office of Undergraduate Admission also played in July in the annual Beancan softball tournament.
Its is true that the name Beanpot is related to the men's ice hockey but actually it means a deep, wide-belied, short necked vessel made up of ceramic and are used for cooking. Traditionally these are related with New England, mainly in Boston, Massachusetts. Because of that the name Beanpot is used for one Boston event as Beanpot Ice Hockey tournament.
