Grapes of wrath
'The Grapes of Wrath' is an American black and white drama film, which is directed by Academy Award Winner Best Director, John Ford. The drama is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning 'The Grapes of Wrath', which is written by John Steinbeck. However, the screenplay was written by Nunnally Johnson and Darryl F. Zanuck was the executive producer.
The film is about the Joads, an Oklahoma family who lose their farm in 1930s during great depression. The family then becomes migrant workers and end up in California. The motion pictures have detailed their entire journey as across the United States as they are hunting for work and opportunities for their family members.
The title of the film was taken from the Battle Hymn of the Republic by Julia Ward Howe. In 1989, the film was one of the first 25 films in the United States National Film Registry by the library of Congress.
The film has got total seven Academy Award nominations with two wins. Jane Darwell was the Best Supporting Actress for her role of archetypal mother. John Ford was the Best Director. The film got other five nominations as Best picture, Best Actor (Henry Fonda), Best Sound Recording, Best Director (John Ford), Best Screenplay (Nunnally Johnson) and Best Film Editing.
Jane Darwell is the marvelous character or you can say backbone and center point of the migratory family. Henry Fonda is superb as an unmercifully harassed Okie. The central importance of family is the main theme of the film with suffering and domination of the farmers, display of human dignity, issues of social and economic justice, hollowness of the American Dream and many more.
