LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport is located on the waterfront of Flushing in the area of Queens and is serving the New York City. The name 'LaGaurdia Airport' to this airport is given after a former Mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGaurdia.
LaGaurdia is the smallest airport of New York areas amongst three primary commercial airports. The other two airports are Newark Liberty International Airport in Newwark, New Jersey and John F. Kennedy International Airport in Southern Queens. LaGaurdia is located at the center of the city and nearness to Manhattan that it is become so popular.
Most of flights go from the airport to various destinations within the United States and Canada and with seasonal flights to Bahamas, Aruba and Bermuda. The Airport is having INS and FIS facilities, which are able to process immigration and customs on arriving international flights. However, the facilities available at the airport are very short that it becomes difficult to handle the number of passengers.
Now, American Airlines accepted the offer of LaGuardi's to start the major program of scheduled flights to Floyed Bennett but the plan was failed because of nearness of New York to Manhattan. However, LaGuardia and American executives decided to began an alternative plan to build a new airport in Queens during this Floyed Bennett experiment.
The airport was dedicated in 1939 on October 15 as the New York Municipal but was opened for business on that December 2nd. The dedication ceremony was very special that the plane was flown over the head with the words "Name it LaGuardia". The modern name then applied in 1947 when the airport moved to Port Authority control.
