Naomi Sims
Naomi Sims is an African-American model who was born on March 30, 1948 and was also an author and businesswoman. She was born in Oxford, Mississippi and having three sisters. She moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her mother and three sisters after the divorce of her parents. However, she died on August 1, 2009 at the age of 61. She was suffered by breast cancer that caused for her death.
Sim was the first black supermodel who was on the cover in 1968 on the 'Ladies Home Journal'. She was a model at the time when there were very few models as African-American models. She did modeling for the brands or designers including Halston, Sanchez, Teal, Fernando and Giorgio di Sant'Angelo. Except Ladies Home Journal she also appeared on the cover page of 'LIFE' published in 1969 and on fashion magazine of New York Times published in 1967.
She started her fashion career at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City when she got scholarship for the course. Sometimes she gets flustered when the fashion agencies refuse her because of her too dark skin. She struggled to get work but didn't get success as she was wanted. Then she decide to work with Wilhelmina Cooper who running her own agency that helped her to rise up in the modeling field. She also got chance in Hollywood from 1972 as a potential actress. She had done her first movie with the title of 'Cleopatra Jones'.
She published some books on fashion career, modeling, beauty and health. Some of her books are 'All About Health and Beauty for the Black Women', 'All about Success for the Black Women' and ‘How to be a Top Model. She also provided advice in the magazine 'Right On' for teenage girls.
On August 3, 2009 model Naomi Campbell attacked the photographer when she was on the tour with her millionaire boyfriend in Italy.
